The pattern

The ones follow the same pattern in every ten: I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX. The tens repeat it with X, L and C: X, XX, XXX, XL, L, LX, LXX, LXXX, XC. The hundreds do the same with C, D and M. Join a tens part and a ones part to write any number to 99; for example XL and VII give XLVII for 47.
